Neil Gaiman kicks off Writing Quotes

These quotes came from The Creative Screenwriting Weekly Newsletter.

"Remember: when people tell you something's wrong or doesn't work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong."
- Neil Gaiman

"Increase your word power. Words are the raw material of our craft. The greater your vocabulary the more effective your writing. We who write in English are fortunate to have the richest and most versatile language in the world. Respect it."
- PD James

I can identify with the NG quote. I've experienced that situation enough to know he is right.

Those are both great quotes and SO true.
I often think to myself that I would like to write "something". Only, I don't have the vocabulary to do anything justice. :)
I have a serious learning disability and learning new things is always such a struggle for me.
I get burned out and frustrated easily.
I'm happy just reading the great stuff that you and so many others put out. :)

Thankfully, I have never seen NG put out anything that would require me to say 'it doesn't work for me'...

David,

It helps if you have editors that know what they are doing. Between Katherine Tomlinson, Christopher Grant, Elaine and you, I've been pretty fortunate.

Laura,

Before there was the written word, there was the spoken word. Now I imagine that Aesop was literate, but his vocabulary certainly only played so much into his fables, and that his ability to tell a story was the real factor.

Look at the Native Americans, they had a tradition of storytelling and a thesaurus didn't factor into anything that they did. Don't let what you perceive as a limited vocabulary, work against you.

You have two strong blogs, and I know from your movie reviews that you certainly know what works and what doesn't. Writing takes a lot of hard work, a lot of patience and a lot of failure before you get some things right. Don't give up.

Aussie Paul,

Absolutely.

Paulie Decibels,

Absolutely (running on automatic, here).

When people tell me something's wrong or doesn't work for them, I usually just make faces or flip them off.

I miss Sandman. Sniff.

Randal,

Uh, it shows sometimes...kidding. Somewhere Sartre is clapping, though.
