Question II...

I'm sorry, I've always accepted this without question and never really contemplated the ramifications of this, but...

...just what exactly does "The Dude" abide by?

The zen of life?

The call of the no dress-code, code?

The call of a ice-cold white Russian? That was my go-to drink when I was at bars where the bartender would grimace at the mention of any drink that needed a blender to be made. That, and a Cape Cod, because there isn't a bartender alive that can f' that up or water it down.

Or is it the law that "one must bowl with a hot chick at least once in life?" Julianne Moore definitely fufills that requirement.

I never was a big fan of that movie.

Good questions. I can't handle them this early. They go unanswered.

I think he abides Walter.

Great. Now all I can think about is "bowling" Julianne Moore, thanks for that!

You can go with the definition "to put with; tolerate", and it works well. The Dude tolerates a lot of things: a Chinaman peeing on his rug, nihilists, crazy rich people, Donny's unceasing yammering. The list is endless.

Dr. Monk,

Sir, you it is a good thing that I think the world of you, because you've just lost points with me and you've been downgraded from "fantastic," to just "wonderful."

Bubs,

Hopefully they won't distract you during work today.

Chris,

Ah, that makes the most sense. Did you know that Walter is based on John Milius, the screenwriter of "Apocalypse Now," "Red Dawn" and "Conan?"

Sky Dad,

Now that, is a good way to waste the rest of the day.

Welles Fan,

An excellent point and that rug really did make the room.

Unfortunately I wouldn't know. I was the kid with the chessboard in the corner of the room hoping a Julianne would notice... she didn't.

Always wondered if this was secretly an ode to Nick Nolte, who wanders through Hollywood exactly like this.
Love this movie. Love Jeff Bridges.

David,

Better being the kid with the chessboard, than the kid that was stood up and left waiting at the bowling alley. At least your mistakes were less painful and you learned from them.

Patti,

"Always wondered if this was secretly an ode to Nick Nolte, who wanders through Hollywood exactly like this.

I'm sure there is some Nick Nolte in there. The Coens based "The Dude" on movie producer Jeff Dowd, who helped them get "Blood Simple" off the ground. Walter is John Milius and allegedly many of Walter's rants are John's, almost verbatim.

Most of it though, is an homage to Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald, albeit with a modern take.

"Love this movie. Love Jeff Bridges."

You have now attained sainthood in my eyes.

I can't help you with this question, my friend. I've never seen the movie.

Cormac Brown said...

Princess,

C'mon, seriously? You've never seen this? Make it your mission this weekend to see this film (and not the TV version, it won't make any sense), you'll be glad that you did.

I'm gonna go with California.

(favorite line? "Beverage here!"

Baroness,

"I'm gonna go with California."

A good counterpoint...

"Beverage here!"

An excellent line, but I'm going to have to go with, "That rug really tied the room together."
